It’s hard to believe that summer is almost over. Now the leaves will start doing their rendition of autumn’s Fourth of July, leaving most of you sweeping up after its parade. And, well … never mind about what comes after that. But there’s some exciting news coming down the thruway.

On October 15, the NYS Highway & Public Works Expo will take place at the New York State Fairgrounds in Syracuse. The Verizon Center of Progress building will play host to what is destined to be “the place to be in 2003.”

At press time, nearly 100 exhibitors had signed up to showcase their wares both inside and outside the Verizon Center. (For a sampling of these exhibitors, check out pages 68, 72 and 86 of this issue.) In addition, you’ll have the opportunity to participate in a Snow Plow Roadeo, which, if you successfully out-plow your competitors, you’ll be entitled to some fantastic prizes, not to mention bragging rights for the entire year.

And if you work up an appetite while strolling the aisles visiting exhibitors, well … whoever said that there’s no such thing as a free lunch? Thanks to Atlantic Detroit Diesel – Allison, CNY Cover-All Buildings, L.B. Smith, Stephenson Equipment, Syracuse Castings and Tracey Road Equipment, all guests will be treated to free hamburgers, hot dogs and more.

Now, if all this isn’t enough, how about some door prizes? Throughout the Expo, which will run from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., close to 30 prizes will be handed out, including hunting gear, a DVD player, power tools, golfballs, a Triball trailer hitch and last, but not least, a limited edition Dale Earnhardt Tribute 12 gauge Remington shotgun. This autoloading Model 11-87 Premier features a 28-inch light contour “Rem” Choke vent rib barrel and American walnut stock and fore-end with high gloss finish and cut checkering. Engraved on the polished blue, highly embellished receiver is Earnhardt’s likeness, his signature and scrollwork on the left side with a “7 Time Winston Cup Champion” tributary banner on the right side. The signature and banner are inlayed in 24-karat gold. The retail price of this sure-to-be collector’s item is $972.
